Zegna suits are some of the most popular ones on the market today. Hence, it comes as no surprise that they’re counterfeited (fortunately, not as heavily as their Armani, Hugo Boss and Dolce & Gabbana counterparts).

In this detailed guide (with looots of pictures 🙂 ) I’ll show you 4 ways to easily spot a genuine Zegna suit!

#1 – Introduction

In order to avoid disappointments and unreasonable expectations, I’d first like to mention that … :

(1) … the focus of this article are Zegna suits, blazers, overcoats and sport coats ONLY;

(2) … suits, blazers and sport coats from other less popular Zegna lines (Zegna Couture and Zegna Soft) won’t be covered in this article because they were, as far as I know, never counterfeited;

(3) … I’m not affiliated with Zegna in any way, shape or form – ALL information contained in this article mostly comes from first-hand experience.

Vámonos!

To simplify matters, please note that in the context of this article the word “suit” refers to suits, jackets, overcoats, and sports coats.

#2 – 4 Ways of Spotting a Genuine Zegna Suit

Logo

The easiest way how you can differentiate a genuine Zegna suit from a fake one (without even buying it) is by simply taking a look at its logo and care labels (which are rarely replicated properly).

I’ll start with the logo.

Older Zegna logo.
Current Zegna logo.

In the pictures above you can see two most recent logos found on genuine Zegna mainline suits (older logos can be found on this link), which should be located below the inner RIGHT pocket (on older models) OR on the inner side of the collar (on current models). On genuine Z Zegna suits, the logo (seen in the pictures below) is located on the exact same spots and, as you can see, has a different design. Should that not be the case (that is, if the logos SIGNIFICANTLY differ from those seen in the images/link AND/OR are located in some other place), then the suit is a fake!

Older Z Zegna logo.
Recent Z Zegna logo.

In case you’re curious to know how a fake Zegna suit looks like, one can be seen in the picture below – notice the position AND the design of its logo (it’s on the left side and doesn’t look like the original at all).

Another important thing to know is that the inner lining of a Zegna genuine suit DOESN’T CONTAIN ZEGNA LOGOS of ANY KIND. If it does, then it’s a fake!

Inner Labels

With the logos out of the way, let’s talk about the inner labels.

Vintage Zegna inner label.
Older Zegna inner label.
Recent Zegna inner label.

On genuine Zegna mainline suits, the inner labels are found inside the LEFT inner pocket of the suit jacket AND in the inner side of waist of the suit pants. Both of them should be 100% identical to each other and look the same as the ones from the pictures above. Pictures of older inner labels can be seen here. On Z Zegna suits, the inner labels are also found in one of the inner pockets of the suit jacket (USUALLY the LEFT one, but not always) AND in the inner waist of the suit pants. They should be 100% identical to each other and look like the ones in the pictures below (or those from this this link).

In case the inner labels are located in some other place and/or significantly differ from those seen in the pictures (or in this link), then the suit is a fake!

In the picture below, you can see a see a inner label from a fake Zegna suit, which does not look like the original one at all. If case that suit ever gets dirty, make sure that you NASH it separately 🙂 .

Quality of Materials

Wearing a quality suit is one of the best ways to showcase your personal style and sophistication, so it makes perfect sense to pay attention to all of its details – ESPECIALLY the quality of fabric it’s made of. In that segment, a Zegna suit is pretty much unbeatable since the production of some of the finest and most luxurious fabrics ever made (wool, cashmere wool, vicuna) had been an integral part of Zegna ever since it was founded in 1910 – they’re SO GOOD that many other clothing manufacturers (including other suit makers) use them to produce their goods. However, the BEST ONES aren’t sold but are instead used to make THEIR OWN suits (and those of several other brands for which they make them).

A sheep in a field.

Whenever you touch a genuine Zegna mainline (and many cases, even a Z Zegna) suit, you’ll immediately notice that its fabric its made of is smooth, soft to the touch (if new, not too much) and breathable which are hallmarks of a quality fabric. In case the fabric is stiff, less breathable and makes you shudder whenever you touch it, then the suit is certainly a fake!

Construction

Zegna suits are renowned not only for their luxurious fabrics they’re made of, but for their sleek and sophisticated designs and ESPECIALLY the quality of their construction as welleven their lower-end lines, Z Zegna and Zegna Soft, are MUCH better constructed (as well as cheaper) from their Armani, Hugo Boss and Dolce & Gabbana counterparts. That’s another reason (besides fabrics) why many luxury fashion companies such as Tom Ford, Gucci and Saint Laurent have chosen Zegna to produce their suits!

Fake Zegna suits are, compared to their genuine counterparts, poorly constructed – the seams are poorly done, the fusing is terrible and the cuts are horrible to look at (let alone wear). If a Zegna suit has even one of those characteristics, then it’s most certainly a fake!

#3 – Frequently Asked Questions

Are Zegna Suits Good?

Yes, Zegna suits are good – so good that even James Bond wears them (Tom Ford suits are made by Zegna).

Also, it’s important to mention that suits from the Z Zegna line are, besides CC Corneliani, Corneliani ID and Boggi, some of the best entry-level ones that you can get – they’re MUCH better (in almost all aspects) than their Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Hugo Boss counterparts.

Are Zegna Suits Full Canvassed?

Yes, most Zegna suits are fully canvassed. The only exceptions are suits from lower-end Z Zegna (which are semi-canvassed and fused) and Zegna Soft (which are fused) lines.

Where I Can Buy Genuine Zegna Suits for Cheap?

The BEST (and most secure) place to buy a cheap genuine Zegna suit is from an authorized dealer (AD) WHEN they’re on sale.

The SECOND BEST place is the Buy and Sell section of Styleforum. On that site, you can shop with a peace of mind since all items that are sold there are always 100% genuine – in most cases, they’re sold by very reputable forum members who are quite knowledgeable about high-end clothes and brand and will gladly help you if asked (like I did several times). The only drawback is that the vast majority of them are used (but in great condition). In case you want your Zegna suit to be NEW and UNWORN, then you should go look somewhere else.

And finally, the THIRD BEST place is eBay and Vestaire Collective (especially the latter). If you plan to buy yours there, READ ALL ZEGNA ARTICLES ON THIS SITE FIRST in order to ensure that you don’t waste hundreds of Euros on a fake one!

Where Are Zegna Suits Made?

Suis from higher-end Zegna lines (Zegna mainline, Zegna Couture) are made in Switzerland, Italy and Spain, whereas those from the lower-end Z Zegna line are mostly made in Turkey and Mexico.

Suits from the Zegna soft line were, from what I’ve seen, made in Italy and Switzerland.
